toneladas. Usan guantes, botas, protector auditivo y ocular, casco y
respirador. Parece ser que el Tajo es el
lugar que más duro y maldito. Fuente: papel. Artículo original Plata o Plomo escrito por

Cerro de Pasco, Peru.
When we speak
of Peru, we all think of its wonderful gastronomy after piscos and its cultural
wonders that are many. I have visited this country four times and we still have
good friends there but not all the beauty and facilities. Peru is a difficult
country and life is not an easy task. We will talk about it and Cerro de Pasco.
On this hill
is the highest mine in the world and where you can find Silver and lead. Silver
is the mineral that gives them the income and lead that contaminates the blood.
At one extreme it is proposed to move the 70,000 inhabitants of the hill to be
able to continue exploiting it.
The hill is
about 4300 meters and for those who have not been so high, I commented that the
pressure felt in the head is strong, the cold freezes, the lack of oxygen makes
each step an extra effort: the evil of height. This place is not a transit site
for visitors and tourists. The sun burns and the wind seems to tear your skin.
To get to the mine you have to take the winding roads through the gigantic hole
drilled there. Its measurements are enormous, two kilometers long by one wide
and 400 meters deep. The wealth of the lands is great, so much so that even the
transfer of its inhabitants was considered.
The population
is old and is afflicted with the problems that the extraction of metals gives.
Children grow up with toxins in the blood and the responsible companies only
think of hiding as much as possible the "treasure".
The so-called
lagoon, where the clouds used to be reflected, is now green with many posters
scaring the visitor away.
In 1630 their
riches were discovered. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century it became a
humble place to live and in 1901 Pasco Copper Corporation, an American
subsidiary, landed but later came more, that added to the governments little
concerned about the environment, it depleted 30% of the territory.
Eva, 54, who
sells chocolates, soft drinks and nuts at the door of El Tajo, remembers when
up to 5000 people paraded in front of the kiosk, now there are not 300 workers
left, which indicates that their income is no longer what they were and that
there is no more projection. They are concerned about the environment but the
priority is to survive.
Juan Solís
went from 21 to 27 years old, going down to the mine for 45 soles (12 euros).
Now he is 30 years old and devotes himself to agriculture: potatoes, corn,
beans ... the workforce was reduced when the most intrusive tasks were
paralyzed, giving way to the use of the last remaining mineral particles on the
surface. These jobs are carried out by trucks at this time.
However, this
break has not made pharyngitis and rhinopharyngitis the main cause of death in
the elderly according to the INEI DE Cerro de Pasco 2016. Another disease is
silicosis although it is not of the greatest fears, the worst is the lead that
is stored in the blood. Lead can penetrate our body in three different ways:
1.- By inhalation
2.- through oral passages
3.- through the skin.
There is not
even a special unit for treatments although they are claimed. At the Uliachin
health center, several mothers await the results of an analysis. Their children
come with drowsiness, headaches, neurological complications, disturbances in
the central nervous system or lack of attention. But the treatment usually
consists of vitamin complexes that in many cases arrive in vain since families
are poor and do not reach the minimum salary of 230 euros / month.
The safety
measures, hygiene and environmental protection never reach this place and that
causes the population to contract diseases such as polycythemia, which
consists, roughly, in the bone marrow is disrupted and produces a greater
number of red blood cells may cause stroke or embolism. An attempt is made to
make children aware of washing their hands continuously, not to touch the earth
... the records show a child mortality rate of 21 cases per 1000.
But not all
places are treated the same. In Colquijirca, where silver, lead, zinc and
copper are still extracted, access there is prohibited and each worker must
present his card before crossing the fence. Most have higher education. They
perform technical positions and very few touch the ore that is extracted daily,
which amounts to 22 tons. They wear gloves, boots, ear and eye protection,
helmet and respirator. It seems that the Tagus is the hardest and cursed place.
