Dentro de la sección de Personajes hoy hablaremos de la astronauta y
comandante Peggy Whitson. Hay una mujer que cada 90 minutos, orbita sobre la
Tierra a más de 400 kg sobre nuestra cabeza. Viaja a una velocidad de 28000
km/hora, cultiva su propia col china, telefonea a su marido diariamente y
comanda una nave con otros tres tripulantes.
Es una mujer preparada. Astronauta y bioquímica. Es estadounidense. Ha
superado los 534 días en órbita y no es sólo la astronauta (mujer u hombre) que
más tiempo ha pasado en el espacio, sino que es la única que ha estado en dos
ocasiones al mando de la Estación Espacial Internacional y la que más horas de
paseo galáctico acumula fuera de una nave (53 horas y 22 minutos). En su labor
como bioquímica, se encarga de estudiar el efecto que tiene la vida en el
espacio sobre las células óseas.
Su cuerpo se ha acostumbrado a la falta de gravedad pero el velcro, sigue
siendo su mejor aliado para que las herramientas no se queden flotando por ahí.
Pero no todo es de color de rosa, también se ha visto involucrada en
situaciones complejas dentro de su dilatada carrera por ejemplo, vivió de cerca
la desintegración del trasbordador espacial Columbia en 2003, en el
fallecimiento de siete de sus compañeros, y ella misma estuvo a punto de perder
la vida en su regreso a la Tierra a bordo de la nave Soyuz en 2008, cuando el
módulo de propulsión falló una hora después de desacoplarse y la tripulación se
vio sometida, en lo que se conoce como “entrada balística”, a una fuerza ocho
veces mayor que la de la gravedad. Sintió como su rostro se retraía y apenas
podía respirar, pero en aquel momento no fue realmente consciente del riesgo
que corría: “Cualquier aterrizaje del que puedes salir por tus pies es un buen
aterrizaje”, bromeó después restándole importancia al incidente.
En otra misión, el pasado mes de marzo, durante uno de sus paseos
exteriores, perdió uno de los escudos que debía instalar en el módulo
Tranquility, pero tras varias horas logró reconectar los cables con éxito.
Pero tiene muchos más records; es la astronauta de mayor edad en la
historia: tiene 57 años y aún no piensa en retirarse. Por ello en su último
viaje bromeó sobre el interés que despertaba por el mero hecho de ser “vieja y
