Hemos hablado de las propiedades de muchas plantas y de algunas aromáticas pero vamos a abordar el tema desde otro punto de vista. Os explico cómo cultivar hierbabuena en vuestra terraza o cocina, de ese modo, tendréis bebidas refrescantes, condimento y muchos usos más todo el año.

Yo he empezado con mi huerto urbano y ya os iré diciendo como va evolucionando por ahora cabe esperar hasta que salgan los tallos. En mi caso, he plantado hojas de lechuga de roble baby, rúcula, espinacas y berros. Veremos si crecen pronto.

Bien retomando el tema. La hierbabuena tiene muchas propiedades pero entre ellas están las digestivas. Después de una comida copiosa, podemos hacer una infusión de hierbabuena natural. Hervimos agua y añadimos unas hojas de hierbabuena y unas de albahaca. Dejamos reposar y lo tomamos. También es un diurético y además estimula el hígado. Todo esto sin hablar de los sabores y olores de los que nos provee.

Si vuestra intención es cultivarla en casa deberéis tener alguna información general: Es una planta que necesita semisombra o sombra, por lo tanto, es preferible evitar los lugares excesivamente soleados y expuestos a vientos.

Se adapta a diferentes tipos de suelo aunque el preferible es uno que tenga retención de agua.  Cuidado, que tenga que retener agua no significa que deba estar encharcado por tanto, deberá ser una tierra que también drene.

Es una planta de crecimiento rápido, así que es aconsejable abonarlo en diferentes épocas del año pero con tiento y solo si es necesario.

El recipiente que necesita es de unos 5 litros aunque dependiendo de lo grande que sea la planta, habrá que cambiarlo cada año o bien empezar por un tiesto grande.

Hay algo importante que tenemos que saber, si la tenéis en un tiesto no hay problema, pero si la plantáis en un parterre, entonces es mejor que la dejéis apartada de otras ya que es un planta invasiva y va colonizando el huerto.

Si vamos la vamos a sembrar, debe ser en primavera. Es la época de siembra pero podemos realizar esquejes casi en cualquier momento del año. Es una planta que brota con facilidad.

La hierbabuena se puede trasplantar cuando esté bien enraizado el esqueje, o la siembra bien implantada, normalmente en 1 mes. No hay que olvidar que los brotes tiernos se pueden cortar casi todo el año excepto después de la floración.

Bien con esto, y en espera de la primavera, espero que tengáis unas buenas matas de hierbabuena en casa para hacer buenos mojitos y estupendas ensaladas de verano. De todos modos, podéis adquirirla en un garden y continuar con los esquejes durante el resto de año para mantener la producción casera.

GARDEN CITY: PEPPERMINT

Peppermint can be transplanted when the cutting is well rooted, planting or well established, usually within 1 month. Do not forget that the young shoots can be cut almost all year except after flowering.
