Quinta do Monte.
Seguimos nuestro camino bajando

ROCAS- ESGOS-
This route I recommend to
everyone, at least, to those who have strong legs and can find a sunny day to
do it. Source: some texts included here have been extracted from wikiloc as
well as the map of the ruta.turismogal.
They told me about it but I had
no idea it existed but the truth is that it was a discovery because of its
beauty and the interesting things you discover along the way. This trail
reaches 9km or so and we did it in two and a half hours at a good pace. Do not
forget that being a route of medium-low level is a bit leg breaks and the
climbs, in some stretch, are somewhat pronounced. The signage is good, although
you have to look at it and not get lost. Beware of slips because if rocks are
wet or leaves can slip and be somewhat dangerous.
We started in Esgos, a small and
beautiful town
where near the health center we parked the car and where we can
see the drawing of the route and its beginning.
After 300 meters we leave the
town and at 500 meters we will reach the crossroads that tells us we can go to
Quinta do Monte or to the Mosteiro de Rocas. We started towards Quinta do
Monte. The route, initially, runs along a path that retains its side walls and
the cobbled where you can see the ruts of the cars that used to travel there.
This "Camiño Real" was a strategic axis as a means of communication
to the lands of Aguiar and Ourense.
The path will follow tracks and
paths until reaching the highest point of the route, located more or less at
the height of the road section. After a stretch of land we will arrive at the
village of Quinta do Monte, where there is a laundry and a fountain. Their meadows
are beautiful and we can see small crops for private use and cows.
We will follow the path duly
signposted, contemplating nature and enjoying the environment. We will pass
through a crossroads and continue the route along the royal road until we reach
San Pedro de Rocas. It is a spectacle not only for the construction but for the
enclave as beautiful as it is difficult to arrive in the past.
However, I do not advance events
because before reaching the Monastery we arrive at the San Bieito fountain. It is
very beautiful and bucolic but you have to see it when you are in front of you
the feeling you have is very special. The fountain is located about 100 meters
from the monastery.
And we arrive at the Monastery of
San Pedro de Rocas which is composed of an interpretation center and the
church, which contains anthropomorphic tombs both inside and outside. It is
also very characteristic of its bell tower, which can be climbed by stairs.
But before continuing with the
route, let's take a few brushstrokes of culture about this peculiar monastery.
In this monastery, unique for being excavated in natural rock, we will not find
light Gothic structures or harmonious Renaissance proportions. It is an
ancient, rough, almost primitive site, witness of the first hermit settlements
in these lands. The value of San Pedro de Roca is anthropological rather than
aesthetic.
Camino de inicio |
The presence of the first
occupants of this place dates back to the year 573. According to the
inscriptions of the foundation stone, preserved in the Provincial
Archaeological Museum, its founders were seven men who chose this beautiful
enclave to retire to a life of prayer. The monastery church, from the 6th
century, is one of the oldest Christian temples known. Its three ships are
excavated in the rock. The roof of the central nave has an opening through
which light enters from outside.
We continue our way down the
rocky outcrops. Here you have to be careful, seeing the cobblestones and the
roads where you can still see the car marks until you reach the breastplate of
the souls. Something new for me. I tell you:
The breastplates of souls like
Meiroá are small stone architectures, very frequent in Galicia, which bear deep
roots in the cult of the dead and devotion to the souls. Located on roads or
crossroads, they can offer a varied physiognomy. The breastplates shelter
religious imagery (especially scenes from purgatory) with a piggy bank where
they make offerings and give alms for the souls of deceased relatives.
We continue with our route where
the chestnut trees and oaks accompany us during this stretch, giving more
beauty to the area and to the experience. We arrived in Meiroa, careful here
because the signage is clear but somewhat difficult to understand, at least for
me. We will continue our walk back to the starting point where we started
walking.
I must say that this path
surprised me because of its natural beauty, the culture that surrounds it and
the general atmosphere. Just to say that from the highest part of the route I
was able to see, unfortunately, the burnt mountain that asolo to Galicia and
saddened Spain. Please take care of these places, it is the only thing we have
and not in excess.
