Colón a América.

respeto y cuidado. Es nuestro patrimonio y debemos cuidarlo.

It's been 2 years since I want to
visit the Sequoia Forest
in Poio, Pontevedra, but the circumstances did not happen.
This year, if they gave and took advantage of visiting.
The truth is that it is very well
signposted and it is not difficult to find everything and it is a small place
but very beautiful. We have to visit it because the views offered by the place
are incredible and if we also chose a good day, the beauty has nothing compared
to anything.
This forest is also known as the
Bosque de Colón (Monte Castrove), and it is the largest redwood forest in
Europe so my interest in visiting and seeing it. It is an amazing garden-forest
for practicing mindfulness. Near the entrance of this forest, there is a
parking place to be able to leave the car comfortably and in front of the
parking, a place to be able to eat with the family type merendero well enabled
(tables, benches ...) but the food has to bring it yourself.
But let's focus on how the idea
came about and how it developed. Its origin is very recent since it goes back
to 1992, when it commemorated the 500 anniversary of the arrival of Columbus to
America.
For this reason, the American
government, presided at that time by George Bush Sr., through resolution H.J.
Res.529, agrees to give the people of Spain 500 copies of red sequoia (Secuoia
sempervirens) as a symbol of brotherhood between the Old and New World.
The result is something more than
2 hectares of redwoods, which give us a beautiful natural corner and fantastic
views to the estuary of Pontevedra. Source: turismoriasbaixas
A delegation of North American
experts moves to the chosen area and they take samples of the land that took to
analyze to their country. Even today, neither the community of Montes de San
Xoán nor the Municipality of Poio, who intervened in this project know who
could place O Castrove in the orbit of the United States to carry out this
project. Once the research is completed, a total of five hundred redwoods are
planted on Mt. Castrove, which was monitored at all times by the United States,
which was carried out by Californian personnel. Either way, the first two
redwoods of the Columbus Forest were allowed to be introduced into the land of
O Castrove by the neighbors of Poio.
All this work and effort was in
danger in 2006 due to the severe wave of fires in the country. Fortunately, it
was the efforts of local residents who managed to keep the Sequoia Forest in
Poio intact. It has been verified through the years that with the shade they
give do not let the weeds grow. Because of this, its presence is an
insurmountable tool to keep the mountain clean.
Almost a quarter of a century
later, the community of Montes de San Xoán de Poio offers all its support to
preserve and make known this extraordinary enclave. The goal is clear: that the
Sequoias del Bosque de Colón, grow and survive for hundreds of years, fostering
unity and solidarity among peoples.
Joint Resolution
Considering that Christopher
Columbus' voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492 established permanent
connections between the Eastern and Western hemispheres and propitiated the
greatest human migration in the history of the world.
Considering that this trip
stimulated the first circumnavigation of the globe and other explorations that
gave to the humanity the true understanding of the geography of the Earth.
Whereas this trip inaugurated a
new world that allowed the formation of the United States.
Considering that the fifth
centenary of such a trip is an appropriate time for the commemoration of such
an event by planting a redwood forest of California on the northwest coast of
Spain, looking towards the Atlantic Ocean, so that during the next 5 centuries,
trees grow from the seedling stage to full grandeur on the soil of the eastern
hemisphere. They will give each individual who visits them a grand feeling of
the potential and wonderful beauty of the Creation and represent the hope of a
future of growing friendship between the peoples of the Eastern and Western
regions.
Thus, the members of the Senate
and the House of Representatives of the United States of America, meeting in
Congress, resolve that:
1) The Congress will finance the
planting of 500 California redwoods on the northwest coast of Spain, which is
being organized by United States personnel in cooperation with agencies of the
Government of Spain to commemorate the fifth centenary of Christopher Columbus'
The new World.
2) These trees will be planted in
December 1992 on lands destined for this purpose by the authority of the
Government of Galicia and the Community of Montes de San Xoan in the province
of Pontevedra and supervised by the forest service of said province: they are a
gift to the people of Spain made in the name of the people of the United
States. Source: naturesobreruedas.
Approved, October 23, 1992.
Well, I hope that this little
introduction will help everyone take interest and visit them, but with respect
and care. It is our heritage and we must take care of it.
