Monçao es una villa portugués situada a orillas del Rio Miño y cerca de Salvatierra a la que se puede acceder mediante un puente que comunica a ambas así como a ambos países, España y Portugal. Esta amurallada y data del siglo XVII de lo que queda la Porta da Savaterra y algunos baluartes.

Es un lugar bonito como todos los que tienen Portugal donde la tranquilidad y la naturaleza son sus bazas más importantes. Es un lugar pintoresco con su plaza mayor, sus callejuelas típicas donde se puede ver la arquitectura y detalles típica del lugar: sus balcones adornados con flores, sus visillos decorando los ventanales, su vino verde y sus bolos de nata…

Sin embargo, el pueblo me sedujo y aprovechamos para pasear por sus calles, disfrutando del entorno y de los rincones maravillosos que brinda el lugar, entre ellos, el paseo fluvial por el Miño pero es obligatorio pasear por la muralla y disfrutar de las pesquerías (donde se pesca la lamprea) y luego coger el sendero que recorre la orilla del rio hasta terminar el recorrido por la pasarela de madera. Esta pasarela, aparte de estar muy bien hecha y ser cómoda, su uso principal es la de no prohibir al visitante de un buen paseo por la orilla del rio aunque este “desbordado” como ocurrió cuando estuvimos nosotros debido a la gran cantidad de agua que llevaba su cauce.

 Si luego nos fijamos en sus edificios, y sus detalles, podremos ver algo que llamo mi atención y que incluyo una fotografía: es la barandilla de una escalera hecha con la raíz de una bogambilla; las típicas fachadas con azulejo azul llenas de filigranas… todo en sí … una delicia.

La intención de este viaje era conocer el parque natural de Peneda-Gerês pero debido a los pocos días libres que teníamos y su extensión, decidimos visitar la parte “norte” del parque que comprende Serra da Peneda y Serra Amarela.

La primera etapa fue Monçao- Castro Laboreiro. Una población de montaña donde se encuentran varios hoteles y restaurantes respetando el entorno.

Llegar no fue fácil aunque las carreteras estaban en buen estado pero  la escasez de indicadores nos proporcionó un gran reto. Este pueblo se encuentra a 1000 mt de altitud y la cantidad de cosas para ver lo hace muy interesante para visitarlo , eso sí, no olvidemos mochila, agua y botas de montaña, si queréis perderos durante algunas horas por sus senderos y montañas.

Lo primero que visitamos fue el castillo de castro Laboreiro ubicado en un peñón a 1033mt y desde donde las vistas son un espectáculo. Este castillo fue fundado en el año 955 por Sao Rosendo y fue abandonado en 1715.

Hay que seguir las indicaciones que vamos encontrando por el camino y continuar hacia arriba. El acceso no es difícil y a cada paso se descubre la belleza del lugar. Para llegar al castillo, veréis que hay unas escaleras  excavadas en roca que facilitan mucho la llegada aunque hay que ir con cuidado pues se puede resbalar.

Al seguir las indicaciones y la escalera, nos encontraremos con un conjunto de arcadas de granito que marcan la entrada y se llama “Porta do Sapo”. La muralla se asienta en la propia roca granítica que se aprovecha como muro. Desde ese lugar, las vistas justifican cualquier esfuerzo y te dan la oportunidad de hacerte a la idea de lo que el viaje nos va a deparar.

Desde aquí, ya podemos ver el cauce del rio de Castro  Laboreiro así como la meseta donde se pueden encontrar importantes vestigios megalíticos. Pero esto no es todo, desde este punto y deshaciendo el camino podemos continuar hacia donde se encuentran “Os Pontes” de origen romano.

Ambos son de gran belleza y por sus arcos fluyen las aguas del rio Laboreiro de 8 km aproximadamente de longitud pero la gran belleza se encuentra en su Fervenza (cascada y pozas) que se pueden ver y disfrutar. Debido a la cantidad de agua que hay en estos momentos, el espectáculo es increíble y se suele ver el arcoíris cuando el agua cae por el primer pozo. El espectáculo  y su belleza es digna de ver.

Una vez hayamos observado todo lo bello de la naturaleza  nos dirigimos hacia el pueblo para visitar la iglesia de Santa Maria da Visitaçao de una sola nave.  Es pequeña pero muy bonita conservando un pequeño museo lateral y una curiosidad: la conservación de la pileta bautismal románica decorada del S. XII, así como el retablo mayor neoclásico.

Esta zona tiene muchas rutas de senderismo, algunas largas otras más asequibles, es cuestión de elgir y ver el lugar para poder programar la excursión. Cuidado que algunas pueden ser complicadas y duras.  Yo os recomiendo la zona, porque se une deporte, cultura y salud.

However, the town seduced me and we took the opportunity to walk through its streets, enjoying the surroundings and the wonderful places that the place offers, among them, the river walk along the Miño but it is obligatory to walk through the wall and enjoy the fisheries ( where the lamprey is caught) and then take the path that runs along the river bank until you finish the walk along the wooden walkway. This footbridge, apart from being very well made and comfortable, its main use is not to prohibit the visitor from a good walk along the river although this "overflow" as it happened when we were due to the large amount of water that It had its channel.

  If then we look at their buildings, and their details, we can see something that caught my attention and that included a photograph: it is the handrail of a staircase made with the root of a bogambilla; the typical facades with blue tile full of filigree ... everything in itself ... a delight.

The intention of this trip was to know the natural park of Peneda-Gerês but due to the few free days that we had and its extension, we decided to visit the "northern" part of the park that includes Serra da Peneda and Serra Amarela.

The first stage was Monçao-Castro Laboreiro. A mountain town where there are several hotels and restaurants respecting the environment.

Arriving was not easy although the roads were in good condition but the shortage of indicators gave us a great challenge. This town is at an altitude of 1000 meters and the amount of things to see makes it very interesting to visit, but do not forget backpack, water and hiking boots, if you want to lose yourself for some hours on its trails and mountains.

The first thing we visited was the castle of Castro Laboreiro located on a rock at 1033mt and from where the views are a spectacle. This castle was founded in the year 955 by Sao Rosendo and was abandoned in 1715.

We must follow the indications that we find along the way and continue upwards. The access is not difficult and at every step you discover the beauty of the place. To get to the castle, you will see that there are some rock-cut stairs that make the arrival much easier, although you have to be careful as you can slip.

When following the signs and the stairs, we will find a set of granite arcades that mark the entrance and is called "Porta do Sapo". The wall is based on the granite rock itself, which is used as a wall. From that place, the views justify any effort and give you the opportunity to get to the idea of ​​what the trip will bring.

From here, we can see the river bed of Castro Laboreiro as well as the plateau where you can find important megalithic remains. But this is not all, from this point and undoing the way we can continue to where they are "Os Pontes" of Roman origin.

Both are of great beauty and their arches flow the waters of the river Laboreiro approximately 8 km long but the great beauty is in its Fervenza (waterfall and pools) that can be seen and enjoyed. Due to the amount of water in these moments, the show is incredible and you can see the rainbow when the water falls through the first well. The show and its beauty is worth seeing.

Once we have observed all the beauty of nature, we head

towards the town to visit the church of Santa Maria da Visitaçao with a single nave. It is small but very beautiful, conserving a small side museum and a curiosity: the conservation of the Romanesque baptismal font decorated in the 12th century, as well as the neoclassical main altarpiece.

This area has many hiking trails, some longer ones more affordable, it is a matter of choosing and seeing the place to be able to schedule the excursion. Beware that some can be complicated and hard. I recommend the area, because it joins sport, culture and health.
