años, se dirigió al maestro y le dijo: “yo he venido para aprender esgrima y
hasta ahora ni siquiera pasé la puerta del Dojo”.
“Muy bien –le dijo el gran
maestro pues hoy tu entrarás. Sígueme. Y
desde este momento, tú haces toda la marcha alrededor de la sala, pisando
cuidadosamente el borde del tatami pero sin traspasarle jamás”.
El discípulo practicó el
ejercicio durante un año, lo cual lo encolerizó hasta tal punto que se dirigió
al maestro y le gritó:
“No he aprendido nada del arte
por el cual vine, así que me voy”.
“No –dijo el maestro- hoy voy a
continuar enseñándote. Ven conmigo”.
El maestro llevó al joven frente
a una montaña y, seguidamente al borde de un enorme precipicio. El tronco de un
árbol estaba haciendo de puente sobre el vacío.
“Pues bien, pasa para el otro
lado”, dijo el maestro al discípulo.
Mirando al abismo, lleno de miedo
y vértigo, el joven estaba paralizado. En ese momento llega un ciego que,
tanteando con su bastón, sin rechistar, pasa caminando tranquilamente el frágil
pasaje.
No fue preciso más para que el
joven perdiera el miedo y a su vez pasará rápidamente al otro lado.
Al llegar al otro lado, siente la
voz de su maestro que le grita: “Tu dominaste el secreto del esgrima: abandonar
el ego, no temer a la muerte, ser indiferente a las circunstancias adversas.
Cortando troncos, desarrollaste la musculatura, marchando con atención por el
borde del tatami perfeccionaste tu equilibrio, y mira, hoy tu comprendiste el
secreto de la vida, creo que serás entre todos el más fuerte. (relato budista)

BUDDHIST ZEN STORY
A young man at a fencing master appeared to be
