LA CHASCONA: CASA DE PABLO NERUDA EN SANTIAGO DE CHILE

Como sabéis, el año pasado estuve en Isla Negra para visitar una de

las casas de Pablo Neruda. Me pareció preciosa y totalmente bohemia. De cara al mar como a él le gustaba y llena de ventanales por donde la luz del sol y la bravura del mar se dejaban ver a diario.

Hoy he estado en otra de las casas de él. La Chascona, que se encuentra en el mismo Santiago de Chile.

La Chascona es el nombre que Neruda dio a su casa en Santiago ubicada a los pies del cerro San Cristóbal , en el barrio de Bellavista , Providencia. Barrio bohemio-nocturno donde los haya.

En 1953, Pablo Neruda compró en las faldas del Cerro San Cristóbal el terreno donde más tarde construyó la casa en la que vivió junto a Matilde Urrutia hasta sus últimos días. El arquitecto a cargo de su construcción fue el catalán Germán Rodríguez Arias, aunque Neruda participó activamente editando planos y cambiando las ideas de Rodríguez.

En realidad, si nos fijamos bien en la distribución interior y teniendo en cuenta el terreno del que dispone la vivienda, vemos que las estancias son pequeñas , sin respetar las distribuciones burguesas de la época  pero sin perder la calidez de casa . La sensación que da es la de estar dentro de un barco en todo momento , estés donde estés así que la idea de Neruda la plasmó a la perfección en su hogar.

El nombre de la casa honra a Matilde, en esos momentos su amante y

bautizada así por el poeta, debido a la gran cabellera rojiza de Matilde y muy ondulada que daba la sensación de andar despeinada. La llamaba Medusa.

En la casa vivió solamente Matilde, hasta que en febrero de 1955 Neruda abandonó a su segunda esposa, Delia del Carril, y la vivienda que compartía con ella en Avenida Lynch, bautizada Michoacán.

Bien hasta aquí ha sido una pequeña introducción generalista del lugar  pero ahora quiero empezar explicando cómo llegué a la casa pues no es muy fácil ni está muy indicado por el camino.

Llegué en metro hasta la parada de Patronato , línea 2. Al bajar me dirigí a la calle Antonia López de Bello y empecé a andar ( 8 manzanas / cuadras más o menos) hasta encontrar el cruce con la calle Constitución. En frente , haciendo esquina, encontraréis una casa roja preciosa que es un hotel. No tiene perdida.

Al llegar a la calle constitución se gira a la izquierda, continuamos caminando y la primera a la derecha , veréis una señal pequeña blanca que ya indica “ la Chascona”. Esta calle se llama Fdo Marquez de la Plata 192. Está un poco escondida pero la veréis pronto.

Al llegar el primer impacto es ver la casa celeste de donde cuelga un cuadrado de hierro pintado en blanco con el nombre de la casa y el Sol/ Medusa , prepararos que empieza el sueño…

hacer una idea. Empezamos por el patio, un lugar acogedor, pequeño , lleno de plantas y con una puerta pintada y dos cuadros a los lados pintados al fresco que simboliza el pasado y el presente de Neruda, un pájaro y un pez.

En el lado opuesto hay dos ventanas con unas rejas muy pintorescas , una de ellas con una P y una M ( Pablo y Matilde) y la otra con un sol ( que simboliza Medusa, Matilde). Adjunto fotografía.

Barra el Capitan

En este punto empezamos el recorrido y me dirijo al denominado Bar del Capitán, del cual pude sacar una fotografía desde fuera de la barra pues estaba prohibido sacar fotos dentro, lo cual no me parece bien pero, en fin…,

Encontramos una barra de bar de madera y estaño en la que podemos observar que la forma es la de las olas del mar . Todo este lugar, como el resto de la casa , están llenos de objetos que Neruda coleccionaba. En esta estancia habían muñecas polacas , una muñeca rusa y una mesa de café que era de un bistrot francés.

Después de esta pequeña visita por el “bar”, pasamos al comedor donde Neruda recibía a sus invitados. EL salón es estrecho y la mesa , una mesa para 10 personas, también lo es ya que a Neruda le gustaba que las personas estuvieran juntas y participaran del calor personal .

Le gustaba el acercamiento y este lugar respetaba dichos condicionantes.

Patio interior

Esta estancia está llena de objetos pero lo más importante es ver como cualquiera de ellos era un pedacito del humor de él. Las copas de colores ( Portugal) porque , según él, el contenido sabia diferente y con más alegría. La loza azul inglesa y en un armarito chiquito al fondo guardaba el resto de objetos. Le gustaba agasajar a los comensales con lo mejor que tenía y era , aparte de bromista, un buen anfitrión.

En dicho armario podemos ver un salero y un pimentero que cada uno de ellos pone el nombre de marihuana y morfina, con eso sorprendía a sus invitados y les hacía reír pero eso no era todo.

Comedor Matilda

Siguiendo por “el pasadizo secreto”, una puerta estrecha y baja en arco de madera salías del comedor y te metía en una sala de 1 mt cuadrado donde había el resto de loza y una escalerita de caracol muy estrecha por donde él iba a la habitación para su siesta, que no se la perdía nunca. Pero eso no es todo, cuando venían los invitados los hacia esperar en el comedor y entonces salía

el por esa puerta recibiéndolos de sorpresa , era algo que le encantaba.

Subiendo la escalera llegamos a su habitación, que después de que el falleciera , Matilde instaló allí su escritorio y dormitorio.

unos ojos colgando del arco. Estilo de Matilda. A la derecha se encontraba el escritorio de ella donde escribió sus memorias. Un cuarto de baño donde aún se conservan cintas vibrantes que ella utilizaba para estar en forma, y la habitación que ella utilizó y en donde Pablo Neruda fue velado a su muerte.

Al terminar de visitar la estancia, baje por unas escaleras a otro jardín y luego subí para entrar en la Sala de Estar “Faro”. En esta sala , vi diferentes cosas que llamó mi atención:

Obras de valor, el gran ventanal que emulaba a las vidrieras de un faro Marino desde donde se veía el Cerro.

En medio se encontraba un mascarón y en frente una chimenea muy bonita en forma de válvula solar y como no a la derecha una pequeña barra de bar.

Sala del Faro

De todo había algo muy especial y era el cuadro de Matilde pintado

por el muralista mexicano Diego Ribera , del cual adjunto una fotografía.

En un cuadro colorista y bonito pero que guarda grandes secretos. Se trata de un retrato de Matilde con dos caras, una de perfil y otra de frente. Solo Diego conocía el secreto de ellos dos y por ese motivo decidió pintarla de perfil por todo lo que escondía y guardaba y de frente , la realidad y honestidad hacia Pablo. Si nos fijamos bien en esta cara y a la derecha entre su pelo podemos ver el perfil de Pablo Neruda pintado, lo cual es muy significativo.

Siguiendo con la ruta y utilizando unas escaleras exteriores, nos adentramos a otro jardín pequeño donde encontramos el mural de María Martner  que cuando llovía servía de cascada en el jardín.

Unos pasos más adelante nos encontramos con el bar de verano de la casa. Como véis Pablo era un gran amante de la vida social, de amigos, de compartir y eso queda patente en sus casas llenas de pequeños bares y lugares donde todos estos actos sociales son posibles de llevarse a cabo.

Aquí encontramos muchas cosas especiales, por ejemplo un abanico que hay en el frente, unos zapatos gigantesco que consiguió de su pueblo natal y unas fotografías pequeñas donde se encontraban , escritos, amigos , personas de la  cultura que de esta manera  les rendía culto y les admiraba, teniéndolos presente siempre.

Siguiendo con la ruta y casi llegando a su final, lamentablemente, llegamos a la biblioteca, lugar austero con una mesa de madera y encima una mano de bronce que era una réplica

de la mano de Matilde, una fotografía de ella y un astrolabio, que sería el sello de sus obras . Podríamos decir que en ese lugar y encima de su mesa tenía todo lo que era importante en su vida, Matilde, los libros , manuscritos de él y el mar , representado por el astrolabio.

En este lugar también encontramos una chimenea y varios estantes donde hay algunas obras de él y donde se encuentran todos los premios que recibió en su vida , entre ellos el Nobel y la legión de Honor.

Bien pues llegando al final de nuestra visita encontramos la sala Francia, una pequeña sala donde hay libros de Neruda traducidos a diferentes idiomas .

Hablando así parece que hablemos de dos lugares inmensos pero en realidad, toda la casa es fiel al estilo de Neruda y a su gusto personal, lugares no grandes pero sin objetos que entorpezcan, ventanales, objetos de colección, pero lugares acogedores donde en todas partes te sientes a gusto y respirando mucha paz.

El 23 de septiembre de 1973, Neruda falleció y sus restos fueron velados en La Chascona, pese a los problemas que significó a causa del golpe de Estado del 11 de septiembre, ocurrido apenas doce días antes. Matilde se preocupó de reparar los daños que sufrió la casa y se encargó de rescatar el legado de Neruda. Vivió en ella hasta su muerte, ocurrida en enero de 1985.

LA CHASCONA : PABLO NERUDA HOUSE IN SANTIAGO DE CHILE

As you know , last year I was in Isla Negra to visit one of the houses of Pablo Neruda. I found beautiful and totally bohemian . Facing the sea as he liked and full of windows where sunlight and bravery of the sea were seen daily.

Today I was in another house it. The Chascona , which is in the same Santiago de Chile.

The Chascona Neruda is the name he gave his house in Santiago , located at the foot of Cerro San Cristobal, in the neighborhood of Bellavista , Providence. Neighborhood bohemian - night they come.

In 1953 , Pablo Neruda bought on the slopes of Cerro San Cristobal field where he later built the house where he lived with Matilde Urrutia until his last days . idea. We started across the courtyard , a cozy , small, full of plants and a painted boxes and two sides frescoed symbolizing the past and present of Neruda , a bird and a fish door instead .

On the opposite side there are two windows with very quaint bars , one with a P and M ( Pablo and Matilde ) and the other with a sun (symbolizing Medusa , Matilde ) . Deputy photography.

At this point we start the tour and head for the Captain called Bar , which could take a picture from outside the bar because it was forbidden to take pictures inside, which does not seem right but in the end ...

We found a bar of wood and tin in which we can see that the shape is that of the waves of the sea. This whole place , like the rest of the house, are filled with objects that Neruda collected . In this room had Polish dolls, one doll and a coffee table that was a French bistro .

After this little tour of the "bar" , the dining room where we received guests Neruda . THE room is tight and the table, a table for 10 people , so is as Neruda liked that people were together and staff participate heat. He liked the approach and respect this place such constraints .

This room is full of objects but more important is to see how any of them was a bit of humor to it. The tops of colors (Portugal ) because, according to him , content wise different and with more joy . The English

In that closet we can see a salt shaker and a pepper that each gets the name of marijuana and morphine, with that surprised his guests and made ​​them laugh but that was not all .

Continuing on the " secret passage " a narrow and low door in wooden bow jumping out of the room and I got a 1 meter square room where there were other crockery , and a very narrow winding staircase where he was going to the room for his nap , not the never lost . But that's not all , when they came to expect the guests in the dining room and then out the door on a single receiving them by surprise , it was something that he loved.

Upstairs we got to his room , that after the die, Matilde installed there his desk and bedroom.

This room leads to the left to a small room with modern round table and four chairs and eyes hanging bow . Style Matilda . To the right of her desk where he wrote his memoirs was . A bathroom where still vibrant ribbons she used to be fit , and the room she used and where Pablo Neruda was mourned his death remain.

At the end of visiting the room, go down some stairs to another garden

and then went to enter the Living Room "Lighthouse " . In this room , I saw different things that caught my attention :

Works by value, the large window that emulated the windows of a lighthouse from where Marino saw the Cerro .

Amid a mask and a nice fireplace front as solar valve was and as to the right a small bar .

All had something very special and was the picture painted by Matilde Mexican muralist Diego Ribera , of which I enclose a photograph .

In a colorful and pretty picture but keeping secrets. This is a portrait of Matilda with two faces, one face and one profile . Diego knew the secret only the two of them and for that reason decided to paint everything profile and kept hiding and face the reality and honesty towards Paul. If we look closely at this face and right in her hair we can see the profile of Pablo Neruda painting , which is very significant.

Following the path and use the outside stairs , we went to another small garden where Mary found the mural when it rained served Martner waterfall in the garden.

A few steps later we find the bar 's summer home. As you can see Paul was a great lover of social life , friends , sharing, and that is reflected in their houses full of small bars and places where all these social events are possible to take place.

Here we find many special things , such as a fan that 's on the front, a giant shoes he got from his hometown , and small pictures where , writing, friends, people of culture thus worshiped them and they were admired , having them always present .

Following the route and nearly coming to an end, unfortunately , we arrived at the library, austere place with a wooden table and a hand over was a bronze replica of the hand of Matilda, a photograph of her and an astrolabe , which be the hallmark of his work. We could say that in that place and on his desk was all that was important in your life , Matilde , books , manuscripts it and the sea, represented by the astrolabe .

Here we also find a fireplace and several shelves where some of it works and where all the awards he received in his life , including the Nobel and the Legion of Honor .

Well then nearing the end of our visit we found the room France, a small room where Neruda 's books translated into different languages.

Talking it seems to talk about two huge places but really, the whole house is true to the style of Neruda and his personal taste, but not great places objects that obstruct , windows, collectibles , but cozy places where you everywhere feel comfortable and breathing much peace .

The September 23, 1973 , Neruda died and his remains were laid to rest in La Chascona , despite the problems that meant because the coup of September 11 , occurred just twelve days ago . Matilde bothered to repair the damage to the house and took care to rescue the legacy of Neruda. He lived there until his death in January 1985.
