Recuerdo a mi

The disappearance of the middle
class
After the famous crisis that we all had to endure, rather than
overcome, it has served to destroy, in large part, everything for which the
workers and left-wing politicians really fought in the past for the expected
and desired middle class to appear in our country, giving family well-being and
options so that our children could study just like the children of the rich and
well-placed socially speaking.
We are in the era where the middle class has almost disappeared, wages
have collapsed, where the demand has increased and where no one has rights,
only obligations.
But all this is not only money, it is also family instability, fear of
the abyss and restlessness and general insecurity. In the paper magazine,
Cristina Caballero wrote and published an interesting article on this subject
that I will summarize and include paragraphs so that we can all enjoy this
information. I also include personal comments that have nothing to do with the
original article published.
The middle class has surrendered since the pillar where it was settled
was stability, something that has been broken or in some cases disappeared in
its entirety. Those who thought that if you worked hard, if you were honest,
disciplined, safer and decent, coming would go well and could offer your
children a better life, they are totally lost. That rule has been shattered.
Everything seems to indicate that we are in one of the great social
changes of history and that will mark the new generations. The model of life
that prevailed: home size, studies for children, health care, pension insurance
... is becoming, once again, a domain for the rich.
Nothing is forever: new market models, the concept of low cost,
everything to wear and draw. Even the work has stopped being forever because
although in Spain free dismissal does not exist as such, you are fired cheaper
and cheaper at any time and for any reason being legal.
You survive as you can. The articles of first necessity are acquired
but the salary does not give for more, not even to buy fresh products daily,
they are put as it puts. Has anyone gone out to buy fish, chicken and fresh
vegetables with some quality? Then do accounts.
All this instability, thinking of today as the future, not knowing if
work will lose you tomorrow has created a society of consumers with low
demands, without clear cultural references, lacking in ideology and with little
focus on traditional focuses of socialization, such as family, educational
system or workplace because day to day, psychological exhaustion and
demotivation flood them. Perhaps this is the society that high social class
needed and was in extinction?
The middle class are distinguished by their manners, their language,
their tastes, their inclinations and even their appearance. It's the family,
holidays in August, floor installment, wedding for the girl and college for the
boy, high-end car financed, savings, effort ... the work for life with which
they can do plans and lace bowls to build their family world.
SEE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOVE.
In the early 1980s, with the advent of democracy, a technical tie was
reached between those considered middle class (40%) and working class (48%).
That perception fell in the 90s to 20%, and its triumph reached with economic
growth: in 2007, in the midst of construction boom, more than 63% of the
population considered itself middle class, according to the CIS . But from then
on, that group began to descend again to the present panorama: only 57% of
Spaniards are included in this segment, almost the same percentage as those of
"working class".
Throughout the last century, this social group only had a serious
attempt at political organization: the League of Middle Classes, constituted in
1913, whose executive committee included lawyers, doctors, professors, a
journalist, a public official, a agent of exchange and Stock Exchange, a military
man and a pair of hacendados. At bottom, there was nothing to join them, so
only a year after its creation, the League was considered unsuccessful. The
people on the street were drifting again.
"The new customs of the middle class, with cinema and television
as the main transmitters, no longer had an impact on their black legend of
hardships and false appearances, but on their economic prosperity and domestic
virtues. It was the success of a Calvinism to the Spanish, indissoluble, linked
to the development, "explains Professor Fuentes.
"When I was a child, in the late 1950s, much of the middle class
lived in alluvial neighborhoods. The aspiration was to access the refrigerator,
the television, the washing machine, which was paid in installments with much
effort. I remember my father working from sunrise to sunset to buy those things
that were received at home as an event. " He never had the feeling of
living on the wire. "There was no money in abundance, but it came at the
end of the month, and with several children behind."
Spain has stopped creating homes at the rate it has been doing for
decades. In 2007, in the middle of the brick boom, 125,000 quarterly family
units were created. But in 2015, that number stalled in only 1,500 new homes in
the first quarter, which is equivalent to only one new family per autonomous
community. According to the INE projection following this trend, in 2029 the
average household will have decreased by 7.3%. Those of five or more people,
who in the 60s were the majority, will collapse by 30%. Families of more than
four members will be something as picturesque as black and white TV and six
hundred. Things of the grandparents. "There is a generational tension that
could be dangerous: if the young man is not economically protected and sees no
future, he does not have children," explains sociologist Narciso
Michavila.
Due to the crisis, less and less, there are people with annual income
within the range of 20,000 and 30,000 euros. In the works, considered of
quality, lowered 2000 euros per year, according to the European statistical
office Eurostat.
The average annual income of Spanish households has fallen by 13% for
seven years, according to the INE. And that has consequences on consumption and
the way of life.
Between 2008 and the end of 2015 2.5 million jobs have been destroyed.
Of these, more than half a million are professionals, small and medium
entrepreneurs or cooperativists; the rest, private sector wage earners and only
54,000 jobs in the public sector, according to Javier García economist and
partner of the institute of economic analysis synthesized.
The job, that treasure that lasted all the life and allowed to
progress, to leave the town, to send to study the children, to summer and to
buy the pisito, is no longer something safe. "Unemployment is the first
cause that crushes the middle class, makes a person lose his social role and
stop being someone," says sociologist Michavila. "It is the first
generation in which children will not live better than their parents." The
dramatic thing is that most of the jobs that have been lost will never recover,
because they have been replaced by technology. Secretaries, interns,
administrative ...
From the time of the minimum taxes of the Franco regime we have gone to
a system that deals with the average incomes. The priority had to be to
increase the disposable income of those who create value, which is the middle
class, but it is not so, and the more we incline the balance towards those who
receive the worse it will go. We are consciously charging those who pay.
