Fuente: Salud alternativa

RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN CAROTENOIDS AND ORANGE
The special feature of the orange is combining
with another powerful antioxidant beta-carotene, vitamin C or citric acid.
The orange is a citrus fruit that has healing
properties because it is acidic and this acid is purifying and oxidant,
disinfectant and microbicidia (like most citrus fruits). A long list of
diseases and favorable actions are what make your juice plus sweet and
refreshing, is a very popular drink.
Orange contains different substances that help
improve the health of the body. These include calcium, phosphorus, iron,
magnesium, potassium, sodium and vitamins. Specifically, calcium facilitates
bone growth in children.
The citrus fruit, especially oranges, are the
perfect solution to combating many disease states but also to maintain good
vitality when it is healthy. Citric acid, which is oxidizing, purifying,
disinfecting and microbicide, stimulates removal of all substances that are not
metabolised and which lie in different organs. Moreover, its abundance in
minerals balanced dose of nutrients needed by the body.

Oranges with more
antioxidants
Scientists from the Spanish Superior Scientific
Research Council (CSIC) have generated oranges with a higher content of
beta-carotene in the pulp, and increased antioxidant capacity in plants grown
with flowering period of just four months. This is less than half the usual
time under laboratory conditions. The results of the study, conducted by
researchers Agrochemical and Food Technology, CSIC, Valencia, were published in
Plant Biotechnology Journal.
The work of researchers has been to transform
plants fresh for endogenic expression of a gene encoding beta-carotene
hydroxylase orange locks. This enzyme is involved in the conversion of carotene
to xantógilas responsible for the orange color of the oranges.
Simultaneously, a regulatory gene is
overexpressed, which is the key in the transition of the bloom and so the
flowering of the plant is advanced. This results in less time fruits have been
obtained that accumulate higher carotene content. Oranges obtained in this
study show a strong yellow (Golden), and up to 36 times more beta-carotene than
traditional pulp. In addition, there have been experiments have shown that the
antioxidant effect of these orange juices are increased by 20%. Oranges contain
a large amount of antioxidants with health claims such as carotenoids, vitamin
C and other metabolites such as flavonoids and polyphenols. Many of these plant
molecules have been associated with antioxidant protection and prevention of
degenerative diseases. Source: Alternative Health
